MULTI-PORT OPERATION

Multiple TNCs and radios can be interconnected to form a "node stack". A
diode matrix is used to route the signals in proper sequence between the TNCs.
Interconnecting more than two TNCs does decrease the thruput since the circuit
is no longer operating full duplex. Diode matrix node stacks of up to 14 TNCs
are in operation. Shown is a four TNC matrix circuit. For more than four
TNCs, the circuit is appropriately expanded.
RS-232 Four Matrix
Note: On the DB-25 connectors, all pin 1's are connected together as are
all pin 7's. On EACH DB-25, pins 10 and 23 are jumpered together as are pins 4
and 20. Comment: The original TAPR TNC-2 circuit board layout mistakenly had
CTS connected to pin 20, instead of pin 4. It took awhile before manufacturers
licensed by TAPR caught and corrected this error. Meanwhile, it is good policy
to simply jumper 4 and 20 in case of a mix of older and newer TNCs being used
in the stack.

This circuit requires 24 small signal diodes, such as 1N914's, four DB-25
male connectors, a supply of small various color coded wire and a small piece
of perf board on which to mount the diodes and interconnecting wires. The
circuits are wired in sequence. For Connector 4, for instance, pin 3 is wired
to the anode side of three diodes in parallel. The cathodes go to Connector 1,
pin 2, Connector 2, pin 2 and connector 3, pin 2. Connector 4 pin 20 is
connected to the anode of three diodes in parallel. The cathodes go to
Connector 1, pin 5, Connector 2, pin 5 and connector 3, pin 5. The wire bundle
going from each of the DB-25's to the perf board can be any length you prefer,
but possibly 16 inches would be adequate.
After the circuit is wired, use an ohm meter to check continuity on each
circuit. As in the dual port configuration, make sure all TNC's are set for
9600 baud on their RS-232 ports. Following power up it will take from 6 to 10
seconds for the adjacent node broadcasts to "wake" them up.

Provided on the distribution diskette is a binary ROM image of TheNet Plus.
Also provided is the SET210 utility which easily allows setting up the node's
callsign, SSID, parameters and password to appropriate values.
For those considering the purchase of an EPROM programmer, JDR Electronics has
a suitable model at low cost, as does Needham. But from whatever source, be
sure to specify one that will handle CMOS chips. Inexpensive EPROM erasers are
available from a number of dealers.
